Faith Brings Victory

One of my favorite verses is Philippians 1:6, “Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.” The life of David illustrates this verse in a wonderful way. As a young shepherd boy, David did not have a strong, conquering faith. God took time to develop him for his future role as King of Israel and inspired writer of many Psalms.

When we see David facing the battle with Goliath, the Philistine giant, David went through the steps to remind himself of his faith in Almighty God:

1. He recalled his past victories over the lion and bear (1 Samuel 17:34–40) through God‘s power and was encouraged.

2. He rejected the discouragement of his brothers.

3. He affirmed his motive was to honor and glorify God, “. . . I come to you in the Name of the Lord of hosts (1 Samuel 17:45).

4. He responds with a positive confession of faith in God to help him (1 Samuel 17:47)

5. He completely relies upon God for victory. God is in control, and all our hope and security is in the Lord Jesus.

6. He rested in God‘s power and claimed the victory. We can and should do the same thing.

Let me encourage you to claim (1 John 5:4), “For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith.” Not by our strength for might, but by trusting in God.

Sometimes we want to see the completion of God‘s will for us, as David did. He waited for years to become King, but God will complete what He has begun in your life (Philippians 1:6). So do not be discouraged - press on to victory.
