The Foundation For Peace
Read with me two verses that teach us how to enjoy the Lord‘s peace. “And the peace of God which passes all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report, if there be any virtue, and if there is any praise, think of these things. These things which you have both learned and received and heard and seen in me do, and the God of peace shall be with you.” (Philippians 4:7–9).
The Bible describes three great aspects of peace for the believer:
Peace from God. It reminds us that our peace comes from God.
Peace with God. This is the relationship that we enter into through salvation in Jesus Christ.
The peace of God. This is what our verses today are speaking of. Charles Spurgeon calls it, “The unruffled serenity of the infinitely-happy God, the eternal composure of the absolutely well-contented God.” It is so amazing that it surpasses all understanding if you have not experienced it.
Then the Holy Spirit tells us the right place to put our minds in verse eight.
“Whatsoever things that are true” - The Bible tells us in John 17:17, “Your word is true.” So read, meditate, analyze, and learn God‘s Word.
“Whatsoever things are noble” - It means, honorable heavenly, worthy of awe in God.
“Whatsoever things are just” - That which is right and in line with God‘s word and standard.
“Whatsoever things are pure” - Things that are holy, moral, clean, God-like.
“Things that are lovely” - They are attractive before God, generous, sweet, pleasing to Him.
“Whatever things of good report” - Highly regarded by the Lord, well thought of in the hearts of the people. So we are to focus our minds, hearts and souls on these things.
The result of this mind and actions brought upon our lives is “The Peace of God” (Philippians 4:9). This marvelous Peace of God will be with us in all the situations of each day. What a blessing from the Lord Jesus, as He tells us in John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you, I do not give to you the world gives, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
Have a wonderful peace-filled week!
